Not many people reading this blog will understand the name of this post, so let me explain. Camp Freedom was the summer camp that I went to several times through middle and high school. It's located towards the middle part of Germany where summer temperatures range from mid 90s to 50s during the hottest part of the day… it all depends on the movement of the jet stream from week to week. With the sometimes quite chilly summer temperatures, the pool in particular was, well it was a good place to have a polar bear challenge in the middle of the summer. Of course, the cold air also brought with it plenty of damp, rainy weather. You start to get the picture, i'm sure… Summer camp was honestly a lot of fun, but there were a couple of years that I wish I had brought my long underwear.
Why am I talking about summer camp in December? And what on earth does it have to do my deployment? Well, the temperature tonight is right there on in the low 40s, so the air is nice and crisp and as I stepped out of my car at lodging I caught a whiff of burning wood or paper. In an instant I was right back there, telling jokes and stories around the camp fire, or just staring at it's mesmerizing glow. Always hoping that I wouldn't be attacked by a 6th grader's flaming marshmallow as it was flung across the camp.
Good times.
